PRESS RELEASE: DESERT ENCRYPTS (AUGUST 10 – 12. 2018)
Multidisciplinary artist, musician, composer, and improviser, Rob Mazurek, brings three of the world’s finest creative musicians to Marfa, TX from August 10-12, 2018 for a series of solo performances and the premiere of Mazurek’s two-part suite Desert Encrypts: Volume 1.
Desert Encrypts: Volume 1, is a two-part suite based on observations from the desert in and around Marfa, TX. It also explores Mazurek’s ongoing fascination with social, psychological, and physiological structures, both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial. The composition includes written music and graphic scores for improvisation. The original graphic scores will be on display at Marfa Book Company at the Hotel Saint George.
Mazurek has been reshaping modern music’s cutting edge for the past three decades. He is co-leader (with Chad Taylor) of the Chicago Underground collective, and director of Exploding Star Orchestra. His compositions utilize traditional, graphic and electro-acoustic techniques and strategies, which have consistently pushed the limits of modern music. A recent All About Jazz review remarks “Rob Mazurek has spent years exploring less tangible parts of the universe, seldom seen—or heard—by others. In the process he has laid claim to a space of his own.”
Kris Davis was named 2017 Rising Star Pianist and 2018 Rising Star Jazz Artist in Downbeat. She has been described by Jason Moran in Art Forum as “an honorary descendant of Cecil Taylor.” Her latest recording, Octopus, on her own Pyroclastic label, pairs her with Craig Taborn and is an astonishing testimony to her fierce individuality and lyrical sensitivity.
Ingebrigt Håker Flatten is a muscular player whose tone and attack on the bass run the gamut from Paul Chambers to Buschi Niebergall. Flaten’s sense of both openness and control serves ensembles as diverse as The Thing, Free Fall, Atomic, Scorch Trio, and the Kornstad/Håker Flaten Duo. His group, Young Mothers, recently garnered praise for their new release, Morose, from Glide Magazine: “the band reels back and forth from moments of complete musical chaos to sonic beauty.”
Percussionist Chad Taylor has been redefining the way drums can be approached for over twenty years. The Wire remarks that Taylor’s “deftness, imagination and formidable technical skill make his playing a joy to listen to.” All About Jazz describes his latest solo recording, Myths and Morals, as “a lively dialogue with the vibrant sounds of the world. The music acknowledges the masters that have been here before while searching for new sounds in a language that is both personal and universal.”
Sponsored by the City of Marfa, Marfa Book Company, Hotel Saint George, Crowley Theater, Bar Nadar, Harmonipan, and Astral Spirits.

Thanks for the kind words after my solo performance at the Novara Jazz on June 10th. “At the Giannoni Modern Art Gallery there is a collection of about 900 works that testify all the Italian regional art schools. At noon, in front of Filiberto Minozzi’s “Sinfonia del mare”,in which intriguing stormy waves crash against the rocks of a small creek, I discovered Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, one of the most powerful voices of the Norwegian scene. The contrabass became an extension of his person, through which he made us vibrate, taking us to the vistas of his land and then let us fall into a vortex of intense emotions. A vigorous and compelling performance, during which we were breathless, a perfect conclusion for a show full of suggestions'” You can read the full article here!

“With their playful humour and avant-pastiche tendencies, Atomic sounds more Dutch than Norwegian or Swedish (together for almost two decades, their membership combines players from those latter two nations). Just when there’s a risk of becoming jaded with the moves of adventurous jazz, the genuinely unpredictable article slammed listeners in the face. Atomic pulverized aspects of free abstraction, creating genuine music of surprise.”

Thanks to Kevin Curtin and Austin Chronicle for the insightful and intriguing article about all the music happening ‘on the fringe’ in Austin these day, and from (amongst much more) the set at Me Mer Mo Monday with Lisa Cameron and Adam Busch last Monday!!!
Thanks a ton to Melissa Seely, The Volstead and Self Sabotage Records for providing an outlet for sound explorations on a Monday night in Austin Texas – right in the middle of the ‘east side hipster walk’!!
“The night’s most thrilling set came from experimental percussion fixture Lisa Cameron (ST 37), singer-songwriter Adam Ostrar (ex-Manishevitz), and double bass phenom Ingebrigt Håker Flaten. Seventy listeners flooded the tiny room for the talented triad, which enraptured them for a 45-minute sonic odyssey that found Cameron plucking, bowing, and remixing a ghostly variation of a gutbucket as Ostrar stun-gunned guitar strings with an electromagnet, and Håker Flaten bent space and time with long explorative solos that snapped back in heavy jazz walks. When the final note faded, the audience remained hushed until an involuntary response broke the silence.
Then everyone roared.”

Thanks to Michael Toland for the review of ‘Village Songs – Den Signede Dag’ in Austin Chronicle!!
“Doctrinal singer Gunvor Fagerhaug Gustavsen and hardanger fiddle by Andreas Bjørkås form the foundation of these tracks, but Bob Hoffnar’s pedal steel on “Jesus Al Min Fryd og Ære” and Joe McPhee’s saxophone on “Saligheden Er Os Nær” add dreamy atmospherics. Likewise, free-flowing freak-outs from drummer Daniel Dufour, saxist Sterling Steffen, and Flaten’s axe-wielding Young Mothers cohort Jonathan F. Horne transform these meditations into rave-ups. The marriage of centuries-old tradition and controlled contemporary chaos spotlights the spirituality inherent in both free jazz and ancient melodies.”

After two increadible weeks of new musics and great adventures with G.I.G.A.N.T.E. throughout beautiful Mexico, I arrived to a freezing cold Amsterdam this morning. I have to admit that was a bit harsh change of environment! But it’s equally exciting to start another tour with a new freewheeling quartet with some of my favorite improvisers today; Teun Verbruggen, Nate Wooley and Jozef Dumoulin. We kicked it off with a dramatically dynamic set at De Ruimte tonite, the music was flowing freely in multiple directions and I cannot wait to continue to explore further with this new band. After deeply enjoying the sounds of fantastic Marta Warelis Trio we’re now on our way to Brussels which will be the headquarter for the next 5 Belgium gigs!! It’s been a very long day and I’m looking much forward to sleep laying down for more than a couple of hours but the energy is still popping. Here’s to music!!!!

After exactly (to the day!) a month on the road (and having my spirit filled up with so much good music and the feeling of being blessed by all the awesome musicians I’m so grateful to be working with, and all the great people that I meet on my way ❤🎶❤), I’m finally en-route back to Austin.
And, I’m not complaining, I’m just making it public, some might find it amusing… And ok, I might be a little bored too…. ANYWAYS, here’s my schedule for my last two days before arriving home tomorrow night (I’m now by point number 7 and feeling hopeful that I’l make it alive!!).

*1 :: I needed to mention the Dinner cause it’s probably the last ‘good’ meal I’ll have in a couple of days and because I’ve been so lucky to been taken care of over the last three days by the amazing Hildegard and Walter that run the residency at Bau 4 in Altburon, an amazing place and absolutely beautiful couple that do some incredible work for the arts and creative music!! THANKS!!!
*2 :: I needed to mention the Concert cause I’ve been so lucky to been workin with the great ILOG (Oliver Steidle and Ignaz Schick) over the last three days, and the concert was Kick-ass!! Which again generated so much good energy that it will make this whole return trip just feel like peanuts!!! THANKS!!!
Point made! It’s just another Saturday night, life’s a trip and I’ll be home for Christmas!!!
